In our Sunday morning worship together, we are in the midst of a series of messages through the book of Hebrews. It begins with the premise that “Jesus Is Better.” In week 1, we began by looking at chapters 1-2 and discovered that “Only The Best Will Do” as we see the supremacy of the Son of God. He is the heir of all things, the creator of all things, the sustainer of the universe, the radiance of God’s glory, and the exact representation of the Father.
In week 2, we looked at Hebrews 2-3 and saw that Jesus is the “Captain of Our Salvation. He came to regain our lost destiny, relate to our difficulties, release us from bondage to death, and restore us from defeat.
In week 3, we looked at Hebrews 4 where we see the Final Word and the Final Priest. The Word is a living, powerful, penetrating, and discerning word. Our High Priest is a great high priest, has passed through the heavens, is the Son of God, is able to sympathize with our weaknesses, has been tempted in every way, and was without sin.
In week 4, we contemplated what it means to be “All Grown Up” in the faith from Hebrews 5:11 – 6:2. Spiritual immaturity is marked by dullness of hearing, inability to share the Word, and an insufficient diet. We went over some rules for growth: daily food (the Word), fresh air of the Holy Spirit, regular exercise of spiritual gifts, adequate rest in the Lord, clean surroundings (as in not letting anything unwholesome before our eyes, loving care for those around us, and periodic checkups to make sure we are living healthy.
In week 5, we had a “One Point Sermon” from Hebrews 6. We saw that maturity in Christ is built on foundational truths (Heb. 6:1-3) and understanding our position in salvation (Heb. 6:4-9) and we can rejoice that maturity is noticed by the Father (Heb. 6:10-12). And the “One Point” is that to be a disciple fo Jesus we must be committed to Him above everything else.
